Sightseeing guide for Kos
Kos is a very interesting island and offers to the visitors natural beauty and a lot of historical monuments. Get around the island and you will be amazed by the beautiful landscapes, which combine the traditional and modern element in a unique way. Each region of the island offers a travel over past, in a mix of cultures. You can visit monuments from Mycenae and Archaic period, up to the Byzantine period, and the period of Italian domination.
It is the most popular ancient sight in the island of Kos. It is located in a wonderful place, full of pine trees, in distance of 4 kilometers of south-west of the capital. Asklipieio was an ancient sanctuary, dedicated to Asclepius, god of healing. It was also a healing centre and the place, where Hippocrates taught medicine. It is separated in 3 levels and you can admire temples from the 4th B.C. century.
HIPPOCRATIC MUSEUM & INTERNATIONAL HIPPOCRATIC INSTITUTE
They are found before Asklipieio and are dedicated to the father of medicine, Hippocrates. You can watch a short retrospection in the life and the work of Hippocrates. There are infrequent publications of his work, busts, currencies, and a lot of publications referred to the New Hippocratic medical science.
THE CASTLE OF KNIGHTS
The castle of Knights with the other fortresses of the island, were constructed in order to protect the people during the season of Ottoman domination. it is very impressive and is connected with Platanos Square with a big bridge.
It is located in the centre of the city, at the Square of Freedom. You can admire exhibitions dedicated to Archaic, Hellenistic and Roman season, which include statues, ceramic and mosaics.
Kos is famous for its traditions and was always the island with customs. You can find folkloric material, with hand made embroideries and others, in the folkloric museums in Antimacheia and Kefalos villages.
BASILICAS OF SAINT STEFAN
It is a complex in the capital of the island that includes two splendid churches. The southern church has 2 entries and 3 lines of seats and allocates a rich collection of rare pictures and unique hagiographies. The northern church is smaller, but is equally picturesque.
BIOTOPE OF TIGAKI
It is a region outside of the homonym village, with rich vegetation. From the winter up to spring, exists lush vegetation, because of the rainfalls, and the region becomes a station for a lot of rare species of birds such as, flamingos and ducks. During summer, however, there is no life there, because of the drought.
