Piraeus port

The main port of Greece, from where you can travel to the majority of the greek islands, is located in the southern part of Athens, in the wider area of Piraeus. The Piraeus port connects the mainland of Greece with the Cyclades islands, the Dodecanese islands, the island of Crete and the islands of Argosaronikos. In case you want to travel to the Ionian islands (Corfu, Kefalonia, Ithaca, Zante, Paxi, Kythira Lefkas), which are on the western part of Greece, then you need to travel from another port, the port of the city of Patras. Patras is 220km west of Athens. It can be reached either by train (3,5 hours) or by the suburban bus KTEL from Kifissos station (2,5 hours).

Besides the port of Piraeus, in the wider area of Athens, there are 2 more, but smaller ports: the Rafina port and the Lavrio port. The Rafina port is approximately 30km east of Athens city center. It can be reached by bus or by the suburban railway (Proastiakos) until Pallini and then cahnge to a local bus which will take you to the port of Rafina. From Rafina you can travel to some of the Cyclades islands and to the island of Evia. The Lavrio port is 60km southeast of the Athens city center and be reached by the suburban bus KTEL. The ferries from Lavrio will transfer you to some of the Cyclades islands, to Kavala and Alexandroupolis in the northern part of Greece. Keep in mind that some of the itineraries are not operated during the winter and that there are far more itineraries in terms of frequency during the summer. You can reach the port of Athens, Piraeus, by using the metro (green line, station "Piraeus") or by bus from the city center (bus line 040 from Syntagma square and 049 from Omonoia Square, Athinas str.). The frequency of the itineraries to the greek islands depends on the season. During the summer, the itineraries to the greek islands are many so as to serve the numerous travellers from around the world. As a result, you need to book your ferry tickets in advance, because especially for the high-speed ferries, tickets are sold out straight away.
