Beaches to visit in Heraklion
In general, beaches in the northern part of Heraklion are better organized, shallower and warmer, although they often get windy. In the south, beaches are less crowded and calmer when wind blows. heraklion beach Nudity is not permitted, but you will find several beaches tolerant of naturists.
Akti Beach - Karteros
Located 7 km east of Heraklion, this beach is very long and well organized. Sun beds are provided and you can find many beach bars, cafes and taverns. You can get there by public transport or by taxi from Heraklion.
16 km west of Heraklion you will find this beautiful sandy beach which is protected by the wind. There are numerous restaurants and hotels in the surrounding area, although the road to the beach is a bit difficult
This is a beach for good swimmers. Instead of sand there are small pebbles, the waters deepen quickly and it can get really windy.
A long, sandy beach 5 km west of Heraklion. The waters are really warm and there are many facilities around. The area is served by public transport and taxes. In addition, there is a windsurfing school.
One of the better known beaches near Heraklion, 12 km east of the city. It can get extremely crowded during peak time and it is very popular among younger people. The beach bar playing loud music cheers swimmers up.
A really interesting beach, worth visiting. The scenery is rocky, while tamarisk trees provide shadow. Sometimes, it may get really windy. This beach is a shelter for the Caretta Caretta Turtle and next to it lies the archaeological site of Kommos. Clothing is optional.
A very famous beach, preferred by hippies during the 60s and 70s. There are naturally carved caves all over the beach which make the scenery one of a kind. Although quite crowded during the summer, it is worth a visit.
Another naturists beach south of Matala. It is much less crowded than Matala, but it is accessible only on foot or by boat from Matala.
If you want to swim in the Libyan Sea, without many people around, then this is the right choice for you. On the sand you will find a mixture of sand and pebbles.
This is a quiet beach without any facilities. It is very clean and preferred by locals. You can also visit Koudoumas Monastery, right behind the beach.
