Coming to Skiathos, your first priority should be to enjoy to the maximum the natural beauty of its numerous (more than 60) beaches.

Koukounaries

It is in the southwest and is also named "Chrisi Ammos" (=Golden Sand) because of the golden glittering of the fine sand in the sunshine. It is ranked number seven beach worldwide! Crystal clean waters, the magic sunset on the front, the pine forest on the back and the beautiful hydro biotope of Strofilia lagoon a bit further produce an unbeatable mix.

Lalaria

Lalaria in the northeast is one of the most beautiful beaches in Greece. Only accessible by boat (when it is not too windy), this natural rock sculpture is decorated with big white pebbles (pebbles=lalaria in Greek).

Kastro beach

On the north edge of Skiathos you can swim in Kastro beach, just under the ruins of the medieval city's castle. In order to get there, you must take a dirt road on your car / motorbike and then walk another 2km. The boat option is also available.

Xanemos

In the northeast you could also enjoy Xanemos' three beaches, only 2,5km out of Skiathos Town, close to the airport. There, you have a great view to Skopelos island and you can visit the remains of a prehistoric village.

Tsougrias

Another swimming option is Tsougrias, an uninhabited verdant islet just outside Skiathos port to the south. You can take a boat and pass your whole day there swimming in the turquoise waters, walking around the pine grove or visiting the small church.

Banana beach

Banana beach unofficially reserved for nudism is located on the island's southwest edge on a short walking distance from Koukounaries.

Tips for enjoying the beaches of Skiathos

  • In case you prefer less crowded beaches, you should consider visiting on the north beaches like Mandraki, Agistros or Aselinos.
  • Arrange on your own the boat excursions to certain beaches, around the island or island hopping. It will cost you less than paying a representative to do that for you.
  • Avoid the Athens one day trip. You will be traveling all day long, visiting Acropolis only for two hours in midday heat. It doesn't worth.
  • Don't forget your digital camera and some extra memory cards. The island is ideal for taking non stop photos of landscapes, people and buildings.
  • In beaches like Koukounaries, Kanapitsa and Megali Ammos, you should try water sports like skiing, rings or even parachuting.
  • In July and August Koukounaries beach will be crowded. Leaving the bus stop, take the path to the Banana beach. After a while you will find a crossing where you should turn left and there you are in a magnificent, less known and less crowded beach in the same bay like Koukounaries.
