The capital of Kos is located in the northeastern part of the island and constitutes the main port. After the earthquake of 1933, the city was redesigned by Italian architerctures and nowadays it is distinguished for its beautiful buildings, its trees and squares. A typical example of the Venetian period is the Castle of the Knights, whose moat has become the famous Avenue of Palms.
