Local Cuisine

The Cretan Cuisine is mostly based on olive oil, and locally produced vegetables, pulses and fruit . Cretan delicacies include dakos (dry barley bread soaked in olive oil and topped with local white cheese, oregano and chopped fresh tomato), pulses soups (lentil soup, bean soup) fried olives, olive bread, olive pate, rice stuffed vegetables, snails, rabbit and many different kinds of pies (meat pie, various cheese pies, yoghurt pie, fennel pie and many more) and salads. Meat is often accompanied by vegetables such as artichokes, eggplants, spinach or fennel. In Heraklion you will find a good variety of fancy restaurants and small taverns where you can taste the traditional cuisine accompanied by a glass of local wine or arrack (a traditional spirit that comes from grapes).

Recommended Restaurants of Heraklion

Thalassina (Seafood) (Heraklion)

One of the best places to taste fresh fish and seafood including cuttlefish, octopus, and a variety of shellfish. The main emphasis is placed on the quality and freshness of the first materials and the recipes are rather simple. The prices are not cheap, but this is due to the quality of the fish.

Istioploikos (Heraklion harbour)

Another place for fish and shellfish, opposite the city's Venetian Castle (Koula). The fish is fresh and reasonably priced and the environment simple and cozy. Quite popular with locals.

Erotokritos (Ammoudara)

A traditional - style tavern with very helpful and friendly service. It serves traditional cuisine as well as more modern dishes. A wide variety of starters and good home made wine.

Pagopoiio (Ice Factory) (Heraklion)

Housed in a former ice - factory, this bar- restaurant is one of the town's hot spots. The cuisine is fusion, ranging from traditional Cretan to Western European. Wines are overpriced. A place worthwhile visiting.

Loukoulos (Heraklion)

Located in Korai street, it is considered as one of the most fancy restaurants in Heraklion. The recipes are inventive combining traditional ingredients with modern ways of cooking. Very good pasta.

Pardalos Peteinos (Heraklion)

A tavern where you can drink local wine accompanied with a large variety of traditional specialties served in small portions (mezedes). Both the food and the wine are good and reasonably priced. Visit this place with your company.

Lykastos (Arhanes)

Located in the village of Arhanes, Lykastos is the most representative of the Cretan gastronomy. Both the menu and the decoration are highly traditional. This place is worth a visit.

Odos Egeou (Alikarnassos)

A good selection of fish and seafood in a quiet and simple environment.
