Naxos is a beautiful island and has many wonderful beaches too. There are several beaches, most of them with thin, white sand. However visitors can also find pebbled or rocky beaches. Many of the beaches are well organised with umbrellas and sun beds and have sea sports facilities. However there are wonderful beaches ideal for those who seek isolation.
For sports lovers, Agios Georgios, Agios Prokopios, Plaka and Mikri Vigla are the ideal places to go. The beach where music and excitement play the leading role is Agios Georgios, while in Agios Prokopios visitors will find some interesting cafes and bars by the sea. For those who are looking for quite and isolated beaches, Plaka, Orkos, Mikri Vigla, Kastraki, Pyrgaki, Alyko and Ayiassos in the south and Abram and Lionas in the north are the places to go. In Naxos there are no beaches that are officially declared as beaches for nudists. However in Plaka, Orkos and the north end of Agios Prokopios nudists can enjoy their bathing. Agios Georgios, Plaka, Kastraki and Mikri Vigla are ideal for families with little children because they have shallow waters. In this case parents may think of Agia Anna too. Beaches in Naxos are a unique experience and they will satisfy even the most demanding visitors.
Agios Giorgios
Agios Georgios is located just outside Chora, Naxos' capital. It is a sandy beach ideal for families. As Chora lies close to the beach, it is scarcely ever empty so you may need an early arrival there to get the best spots. The beach is organised and has umbrellas and sunbeds as well as sea sports facilities. By the shore there are numerous hotels and apartments as well as taverns and restaurants. The closer to Chora the more crowded it will be; however further south even though the sand starts to turn into pebbles it is more quiet.
Agios Prokopios
Agios Prokopios is considered to be one of the best beaches in Naxos. It is an organised with umbrellas and sunbeds long
beach with gritty sand. At the northern end of the beach the big rocks penetrate into the sea and create a unique scenery. Further south, the beach changes as there are trees which provide visitors with shade. Near the beach there is a wide range of hotels and apartments as well as mini-markets and souvenir shops. Visitors can enjoy their meal at one of the taverns and restaurants, or a coffee or drink at the cafes and bars.
Agia Anna
Agia Anna beach is located right after Agios Prokopios Beach, within a walking distance. It is a narrow sandy beach with scattered rocks which is crowded during most periods. Visitors can find umbrellas and sunbeds to rent. It used to be the main port of Naxos some years ago, however today it gathers caiques and yachts. By the beach visitors can find many hotels, apartments and studios where they can stay as well as taverns, restaurants and lovely bar-cafes overlooking the sandy beach and the port.
Plaka
Plaka beach is the continuation of Agios Prokopios and Agia Anna beaches. The beach is distinguished for its wonderful white sand and the emerald waters. The beach is organised and has umbrellas and sunbeds. Plaka is very popular among nudists however this does not mean that it is a nudist beach. There are many accommodation units able to accommodate the visitors. There are also taverns with view to the beach where visitors can enjoy the local cuisine.
Orkos
Orkos beach lies between Plaka and Mikri Vigla beaches. It is a long (1,5km) pebbled beach with cedar trees, unusual for a beach. Orkos is one of the most widely known Naxos' surfing beaches and visitors can find sea sport facilities there. Orkos beach is consisted of many smaller beaches which look like private ones.
Mikri Vigla
Mikri Vigla is situated in the south western part of Naxos and is considered to be as one of the most beautiful places on the island. Its white sand and the crystal clear emerald and azure waters. The small piece of land penetrating into the sea, which separates it from neighbouring beaches creates a magnificent scenery. The beach can be accessed by car. Travellers can find some accommodation units near the beach, especially apartments, and taverns with excellent local dishes.
Kastraki
Kastraki beach is located in the south western part of Naxos, right after Mikri Vigla beach. It is a quiet sandy beach with crystal clear waters. In certain quiet areas of the beach there are nudists. In the area there are a few accommodation units and taverns. Kastraki is the ideal place in Naxos for those who wish to enjoy quiet vacation by the sea.
Alyko
Alyko is considered to be one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. It is a white sand beach with a forest of cedar trees and clear emerald waters. Even though all the way to the beach is asphalt, local transportation is quite problematic so it is necessary for visitors to have their own vehicle. Alyko beach is ideal for those who seek isolation.
Glyfada
Glyfada beach is found between Kastraki and Alyko beaches. Even though it is quite isolated as a beach and there are no umbrellas or sunbeds in the area there are hotels and apartments as well as some taverns.
Pyrgaki
Situated right after Alyko beach, the area combines the beauty of the sea and the inland beauty. The sandhills and the abundant cedar trees impress even the most demanding visitors. Pyrgaki is in general hardly ever crowded. In the area there are a few taverns and a few new-built hotels.
Ayiassos
Protected by even the strong north wind Ayiassos is a wonderful beach with clear and calm waters. The road to the beach is asphalt till Alyko but then it becomes earth road for about 2,5km. There are very few rooms to let in the area but if you decide to stay you will be compensated by the splendid area. Do not miss to taste the marvellous local dishes at the tavern right above the beach.
Lionas
Lionas bay is a quiet bay located in the southern Naxos near the homonymous village. Lionas used to be the first port to export emery however nowadays the village is quiet and visitors can find a few taverns where they can taste fresh fish and other sea dishes.
Abram
Located in the north western part of the island, Abram bay is one of the most famous and easily accessible beaches of the northern Naxos. By the beach there is a lovely tavern with wonderful view to the beach and excellent food and wine. The area is ideal for those who wish to enjoy a relaxing holiday far from the crowd.
Apollon
Apollon beach is located in the northern part of the island near the homonymous village. The crystal clear waters and the statue “Kouros”, found at the area, are the main attractions. There are good taverns by the waterfront where visitors can taste fresh fish and local meat dishes. The newly constructed road to the village makes the access easy.
Moutsouna
Moutsouna is located in the south eastern part of Naxos and is the port of Aperanthos village. The area is considered to be as one of the most beautiful on the island. In close proximity to the beach visitors can find taverns and a few accommodation units. Local transportation is problematic so it is recommended that visitors who decide to stay at Moutsouna should have a vehicle.
