The "Island of Winds", as it is often referred to, presents a significant amount of interesting things to see. Below you can find a few of those:

Delos Island

Delos is a small island of great archaeological interest, which is found 3,5 kilometres west of Mykonos. Accessing it is very easy with "kaikia" (small boats) and daily excursions are organised continuously. It is the most important Pan-Hellenic sanctuary. According to the mythology it is the place of birth of two gods, Apollo and Artemis. The habitation of island is dated from the 3rd b.C. century and it has a very long history. It was declared independent 314 b.C. but was retaken from the Romans, who used it as a very important harbour and for this developed economically in the next years. The Terrace of the Lions, dedicated to Apollo, the Minoan Fountain, the House of the dolfins, decorated with noumerous mosaics are some of the unique landmarks you can admire at Delos. The excavations began in 1873 and in 1990 Delos was included in world's cultural heritage, protected by the UNESCO, because of its religious importance.

Archaeological Museum (Tel.: +30 22890 - 22 325)

The archaeological museum is located in the city of Mykonos, near the harbor. It allocates a unique collection of sculptures, ceramic and jewels which were emanated from excavations in Mykonos, in Delos and in Renia. Some of them are dated in the geometric season and touch upon until the 6th A.C. century. You can admire among others the rich collection of amphora, vessels and Cycladic figurines. The museum is famous for the well-known collection from vases, which includes a vase of 17th century, that portrays Trojan Horse. Openly 8.30-15.00 daily, except Monday.

Mykonos Folklore Museum (Tel.: +30 22890 - 22 591)

The folklore museum of Mykonos is located in an old two-storied mansion, near the castle of Mykonos. It is worth visiting, in order to admire the enormous collection from keys, hand-made clothing, embroideries, photographs and gravures, old furniture and tools.The folklore museum of Mykonos also has an archive of historic manuscripts and a small library. It is open from April up to October, 4.30[mm]-8.30[mm], daily, except Sundays.

Agricultural Museum - Boni Windmill And Lena's House

Both are divisions of the Mykonos Folklore Museum(tel.: +30 22890 - 26 246) (tel.: +30 22890 - 22 390) The agricultural museum is outdoor and is found in the place Ano Mili. You will have the opportunity to see threshing machines, a well, an oven and all objects that are used in the production of farm products. Boni is the best example of windmill of 16th century and is maintained in very good situation. Open from April up to October, 4[m]-8[mm], daily. The house of Lena is an authentic Mykonian house of 19th century, which is situated near the three wells. The decoration is traditional and the furniture antiques. Open from April up to October, 6.30[mm]-9.30[mm], daily, except Sundays.

Aegean Maritime Museum(Tel.: +30 22890 - 22 700)

It is situated in the centre of city, near the region Three Wells and it is unique for somebody that is interested for the naval tradition of island. In the naval museum you can found models from rowing boats, travelling boats and all kinds of ship from the pre-Minoan Period up to 19th century as well as a variety of maritime instruments. There is also a collection with currencies and gravures, on which are portrayed naval representations. Openly from April up to October, 10.30[mm]-13.00[mm], daily and the afternoons 6.30 -9.00.

Petros The Pelican

It came in the island of winds, round 1954, after a storm and from then became permanent resident of island. When it died, caused deep sadness at the residents and for this it was replaced immediately, creating a tradition for the island. Today Petros is the official mascot of Mykonos.


From the 16th century the windmills constitute signal of deposited Mykonos. They are located southerner of country and look towards the sea. They were manufactured in order to advantage the winds and the aeolian energy of the island that has strategic place in Aegean. After the industrialisation the number of windmills began to decline and today exist only 7, which however continue with their light blue colour to stand imposingly in the island.

Little Venice

It is the western region of island next to the sea. This neighbourhood is famous for the unique houses, that the balconies of hanging above the sea. Some of the old houses are turned into stylish bars which are very romantic. A unique place to enjoy the splendid sunset.


The church in Paraportiani and the windmills the two trade marks of Mykonos. It is located near the entry of central harbour and is from the greatest architectural monuments. In reality it is not only one church, but 5 small churches, 4 from these are in the ground and a 5th and the most ancient is one level above.

The Public Library

It is found in the square, behind the church of Agia Kiriaki. In the bookshelves, apart from above 4.000 volumes of books, you can find also a unique collection from gravures and photographs of the 18th and 19th century.


In the island of Mykonos, exist above 70 churches. This big number is the result of supernumerary votive offerings of the residents of island and of one old tradition, according to which the residents enshrining the bones of their dead in the walls of familial shrines. The most famous post- Byzantine churches that are famous for their architecture, is Zoodochos Pigi, Agia Kiriaki, the Old Metropolis, saint Nikolaos and Saint Helen.

The Three Wells

The three wells, is the region in the island, where are found 3 wells, that supplied Mykonos with water up to 1956.

The Town Hall

The two-storied building, that accommodates today the municipal authority of Mykonos was manufactured in the 1780, in order to accommodates initially the Russian consulate and then in the years of Greek revolution the Greek community.

The Monastery Of Virgin Mary

The monastery was constructed in the place where was found an old church of Virgin Mary. The visitors are astonished by the architecture of group, the imposing marble belfry, the Byzantine pictures and the all kind of religious objects that create a collection of immense value.

The Monastery Of Paleokastro

It is the most representative sample of cycladean architecture in the monasteries. It is found north by the Ano Mera, in one of the most ancient regions of island. Do not omit to visit the church of Agios Blassis.
